Dozens of dogs poisoned then fatally shot in rural Arkansas

Here's what they found in the rural, wooded area in Searcy County, Ark.: dozens of dead dogs, which appeared to have been shot and might have been poisoned, though that's still unclear.

He said that he has not seen anything like this in his 25 years of law enforcement.

Now local shelter volunteers are trying to save the last of the few remaining survivors.

Even law enforcement is stunned by the carnage.

Searcy County Sheriff Joey Pruitt says the dogs were likely there for a few days.

Two people from a lumber mill were in a remote forest area to look at timber tracts when they came upon the gruesome scene.

Three dogs were rescued and taken in for treatment.

That dog will be up for adoption soon.

One female it too skittish to approach the food.

The people of this Humane Society are trying to channel their anger into nursing the survivors back to health.

Shelter volunteers are so disturbed by what happened that they can barely contain their emotions.

"In total, about 60 dogs were found dead or so badly injured that they had to be euthanized", Pruitt said.

Jean Passmore, the treasurer of the Searcy Humane Society, just can't stop questioning why this was done.

The sheriff and state investigators recovered evidence, but they're still processing the massive crime scene. Pruitt said whoever is responsible could face felony charges.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Searcy County Sheriff's Office at 870-448-2340.

The Searcy County Sheriff's Office and the Humane Society of Searcy County are investigating the case.
