Fatal accident on Las Vegas strip

The scene on the Las Vegas Strip after a hit-and-run driver hit dozens of pedestrians on December 20, 2015.

Cars were being diverted near the Paris Las Vegas hotel, where the Strip was shut down as first responders rushed to the chaotic scene.

Zimmerman said the driver, a woman who had a toddler in the vehicle with her, twice drove off the road and into the sidewalk on South Las Vegas Boulevard - the famous Strip.

Over 37 injured in crash on Las Vegas Blvd, one person is confirmed deceased, several still critical.

McGrath said she was driving a 1996 Oldsmobile 4-door vehicle with OR plates.

At least 36 pedestrians outside the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino were injured, including an 11-year-old child.

"This was not an act of terrorism", Deputy Police Chief Brett Zimmerman said. "(It's) unknown if it's an intentional act or impairment act", he said. "We are treating this as an intentional act". "She rode the sidewalk, she came to a stop at the Paris intersection, people are punching into the window... she accelerated again and just kept mowing people down". The person killed was an adult, he said.

Rabia Qureshi, a tourist visiting from Wisconsin, told broadcaster KSNV she saw victims "flying through the air" when the vehicle crashed into the throng of people.

The Las Vegas Strip is lined with luxury hotels and casinos, and is filled with revelers taking in the glimmering lights and loud music on any given night. But she has since been taken into custody and is being interviewed and tested for alcohol and controlled substances. They could see police investigating about a block away from the scene of the crash.

"At first, I thought it was a movie shoot", Mr. Ortega said.

University Medical Center treated 15 patients, with three listed as critical, two discharged and the rest in serious condition, a spokeswoman said in an email.

Cohen said the victims' injuries included head injuries, cuts and broken bones.

An 11-year-old was among the injured, along with visitors from Montreal, Canada, said University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen.

On Oct 24, a woman was accused of driving into a crowd during Oklahoma State's homecoming parade in Stillwater. The crash took place about 6 p.m. The Miss Universe pageant was being held at the Planet Hollywood at the time of the crash.

 

Multiple police and fire trucks raced to the scene to treat the victims at around 7pm local time.
