Mariners re-sign RHP Iwakuma after reported deal with Dodgers

Dipoto truly values a player with Iwakuma's abilities and has made that very clear on multiple occasions, and once again stated how big of a deal this is for this team. Iwakuma's return all but sets Seattle's rotation going into spring training. Iwakuma had agreed to a three-year $45 million dollar deal with the Dodgers.

Iwakuma will be in Seattle for an 11:30 a.m. PT news conference on Friday at Safeco Field.

"A lot of things happened in the last week". The Dodgers have been haggling with Iwakuma's representative and could be looking for contract protection in their deal with Iwakuma, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Iwakuma was a priority for Seattle in the offseason, but reports surfaced earlier this month that Iwakuma and the Dodgers had agreed to a contract.

"We were comfortable with (his health) from the get go", Dipoto said.

Had the Dodgers gone for Iwakuma, they would have forfeited a first round draft pick.

It worked out for Seattle to add another experienced starter and provide another layer of depth to its rotation.

Finding a way to re-sign Iwakuma was a priority for Seattle entering the offseason. Over four years with the Mariners, the right-hander is 47-25 with a 3.17 ERA (117 OPS+).

Hisashi Iwakuma is staying in Seattle. One of the primary Seattle Mariners rumors that fans will want Jerry Dipoto to address is what Iwakuma has to do in 2016 for the vesting options to kick in for 2017 and/or 2018. In addition to last season's injury, he also has a history of shoulder difficulties that stretches back to 2010 when he still pitched in the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan, as well as a finger tendon injury that delayed the start of his 2014 season as well. But if the reports are true, the Dodgers likely will look to find pitching elsewhere, potentially through a trade or with another free agent.
