Colts sign Chuck Pagano to contract extension

Colts sign Chuck Pagano to contract extension

The head coaching vacancies, as of Monday night, include Miami (fired Joe Philbin on October 5), Philadelphia (fired Chip Kelly Dec. 29), and Tennessee (fired Ken Whisenhunt Nov. 3).

Pagano, who is 41-23 and has made three playoff appearances, is expected to meet with team owner Jim Irsay on Monday.

The Colts had a rough season and could never bounce back from Luck's injury.

Lost in the midst of Chuck Pagano's contract extension tonight is the fact that owner Jim Irsay also announced a contract extension with general manager Ryan Grigson, saying that Grigson and Pagano are "contractually tied".

With speculation still swirling about the coach's future Monday afternoon, the players continued lobbying in support of Pagano.

Grigson's supporters have questioned Pagano's ability to get his players to execute. As bad as 2015 was, Irsay has effectively offered Pagano a mulligan. Pagano gave a speech after the win that even seemed to inspire Irsay. "He has a vision for this team, and whatever it is, we will try and get it done". Obviously, the duo agreed that it would be best to keep the 55-year-old on the sidelines.

"We have the right stuff here to win a world championship", Irsay said, referencing the coach and general manager.

"We agree to disagree", Pagano said. After turning down a contract extension he considered insulting prior to the 2015 season, Pagano led the Colts to an 8-8 record, one game behind AFC South champion Houston.

Over the past few weeks, it looked and sounded as if Pagano's four-year tenure in Indianapolis would end. Pagano downplayed any issues between the two.

"Chuck is a great man", Grigson said.

"We have a lot of meetings together".

Only three National Football League head coaches have been handed their walking papers by the end of Week 17 but much more could be in store in this year's Black Monday.

"I liked him when he first came in and now he's kind of gone downhill every since then, so I think it's probably going to be for the best for the Colts that he's out of here", fan Ryan Wilson said.

Pagano posted three straight 11-5 campaigns and a trip to the AFC Championship a season ago before this past year. It's about making decisions that are best for the horseshoe.' It's not about me. He didn't let the storm overwhelm him. His dramatic, "They can't eat you". "They can fire you, but they can't eat you". At the 1:21 point in the video below, you can see Irsay applauding everything that Pagano says. That's not going to happen.

"Words can't describe how I feel right now", Pagano said. If anything, Grigson should have been the one to go as he hasn't done anything special lately. I am grateful to Mr. Irsay for this opportunity. "Chuck Pagano is a great man. We've been through the wringer together, but we're still focused on the same goal".
