Here's how to get your free Chipotle burrito 'raincheck'

Chipotle Mexican Grill will close all its restaurants for lunch today.

Chipotle organized the meetings after a multi-state outbreak of e. Coli-related illness linked to the chain's restaurants. The company, which has more than 1,900 locations, announced that they have already made many changes to tighten its food safety.

"With all of the Chipotle news, with the bacteria, I am excited that they are taking proactive measures for whatever is wrong", Adkins said. Sales have fallen and traffic plummeted during the fourth quarter.

Last week, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the two outbreaks tied to the chain appeared to be over.

The Mexican chain shut down all 2,000 of its locations during lunchtime Monday for a company-wide meeting about food safety. The meetings come after dozens of customers were sickened at Chipotle restaurants, first by an E. coli outbreak in late October, 2015, and then by a norovirus in December. The company is taking these steps following an E. coli outbreak that began last summer.

"With this program we're committing up to $10 million to help local growers provide Chipotle with produce and meats that meet our new food safety protocols", said Chipotle co-CEO Steve Ells in his announcement to employees.

Investigators were not able to determine what specific food caused the outbreak. Shares were down 3.3 percent and closed at $444. Those new standards include DNA testing on all ingredients before they are shipped to restaurants.

"It's just unbelievable. I've never found Chipotle to be closed like this", said Almah, who frequents the restaurant each week.

It will likely take Chipotle a long time to earn back consumers' trust. In order to keep their customers satisfied, Chipotle has offered a deal too good to refuse: free burritos!

Chipotle offered free burritos to customers whose lunch plans were scrapped by Monday's closing, USA Today reported. You'll be asked to text the word "raincheck" to 888-222.
