Pirates Place Gerrit Cole On DL With Elbow Inflammation

That's why it was so satisfying to see Montero, the last guy left on the bench, step up to the plate with the bases loaded and none out in the 13 inning of a tie game against the Pirates on Monday night. Vogelsong is 5-7 with a 5.60 ERA in 20 career games (12 starts) against the Cubs.

After a late night thriller in Game 1 with 13 combined runs, the Cubs only needed three runs to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates (67-63) in Game 2. But when Miguel Montero looped a single against a drawn infield to score Kris Bryant, it was all worth it.

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole has returned to the team after getting his sore right elbow examined and is already playing catch. Anthony Rizzo then grounded out, scoring Fowler. Last time he faced the Cubs in July, he lasted 2 1/3 innings seven hits and four earned runs.

Detroit's Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Tigers over the Chicago White Sox 4-3. Montero had been sitting on the bench for five hours, but that wasn't so long to wait to be the hero and to find the Cubs their fifth walk-off win of the season.

Josh Harrison first recorded a one-out single.

The Cubs opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Fowler led off with a single to shallow left, advanced to third on a throwing error by Brault into center and scored when Rizzo hit a fielder's choice grounder to third. The Cubs added two runs in the third for a 3-0 lead. It's the ninth of his last 11 hits that has gone for extra bases. He only struck out four, but the Pirates had little solid contact as he kept them off-balance with a mix of pitches, including two- and four-seam fastballs.

Arrieta departed in the seventh inning in favor of left-hander Travis Wood with one out and runners on first and second.

The Pirates lacked a baserunner through three innings. The dinger completed the comeback from a three-run deficit that began in the eighth with a two-run Contreras home run to straightaway center filed.

The tenth ended on a double play tag out of Javier Baez at home, mirroring a similar situation that ended the twelfth. He retired Andrew McCutchen but hung a pitch to Gregory Polanco, and the right fielder took it for an opposite-field home run (-0.426) that suddenly put the Cubs in a one-run hole.

Brault departed after four innings, allowing three runs and five hits. This allowed Locke to intentionally walk Bryant. Chicago will need a strong effort here from Montgomery if he is going to get the Cubs another win as they are facing a very desperate group that is coming off a very tough loss and while Montgomery has shown he can be a starter before I think it will be a bit of an adjustment here.

Jose Reyes dashed home to score the tying run in the eighth on a unsafe collision at the plate. Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl delivers during the first inning of a baseball game against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, in Chicago.

Pirates reliever Tony Watson had gotten Soler to chase earlier in the at-bat to get to a two-strike count, but his 1-2 pitch got too much plate and was left over the outer half. One day after they finished a nine-game, 10-day West Coast trip punctuated by flight delays and a short night's rest, the Cubs came back twice to knock off a Pirates team involved in a tight battle with St. Louis for the NL's second wild-card spot.
