PA Electors Stay With Trump: Calls To Overturn After Possible Russian Influence

Ten electors on Monday released an "open letter" to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper requesting information about ongoing investigations on ties between Trump and "Russian government interference in the election".

The Republican upstart, who defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College 306-232, has seen his former opponent's lead in the popular vote swell and swell ever since Election Day on November 8, and is now mired in controversy over whether Russia's government hacked the election to ensure a Trump victory.

The letter said the Founding Fathers envisioned the Electoral College as a deliberative body and not simply a rubber stamp to ratify the results.

The electors also call on the president-elect to provide "conclusive evidence that he and his staff and advisors did not accept Russian interference, or otherwise collaborate during the campaign, and conclusive disavowal and repudiation of such collaboration and interference going forward". DefendDemocracy maintains that the Electors must defend our democratic ideals and cast their vote for Hillary Clinton or someone other than Trump, even in states where Trump won the popular vote, because of the severity of this nonpartisan issue. The DefendDemocracy campaign asserts that Trump is such a candidate - and our Vermont delegation will stand in solidarity with 49 other state campaigns in the hopes of nullifying Trump's victory through the last remaining mechanism available in the electoral process.

There is also a petition with almost five million signatures demanding the College thwart Trump and put Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton in his place.

The efforts still amount to longshots.

A judge will hear arguments in a lawsuit by two Colorado electors challenging the requirement that they vote for the state victor of the presidential election.
