Russian authorities say at least 26 people in a Siberian community have died in the past few days after drinking body lotion that contained methyl alcohol, or methanol.

Late on Sunday, Russia's Investigative Committee and the Interior Ministry in the region reported about 18 cases of alcohol poisoning, including eight deaths, in Irkutsk, one of the largest cities in Siberia. Another 16 to 20 people are now in three hospitals of the city, according to varying reports.

Officials said the bottles of lotion were clearly marked with warnings that they are not for internal use.

They also said that Hawthorn bath lotion was available at about 100 outlets in Irkutsk.

Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement that 42 people had sought medical attention over the weekend after having drunk the liquid labeled as hawthorn-scented bath essence, 25 of whom died.

Although poisonings with surrogate alcohol are not uncommon in Russian Federation, the Irkutsk incident appears to be one of the deadliest in years.
