Alleged Kidnapping Ends in Double Tragedy on Eastern Oregon Highway

Officers chased Montwheeler, following him through the city and then south onto Highway 201.

A reported kidnapping and police chase ended with a fatal crash Monday morning when the suspect smashed his truck into an SUV on Highway 201. As officers arrived on a scene, the suspect drove away in a black pickup truck. The pickup crossed the centerline and collided with an SUV.

The woman in the Dodge died at the scene, as did the driver of the Ford. His passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A passenger in the SUV and the driver of the pickup the alleged kidnapper were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to a nearby hospital. A woman in the suspect's vehicle, believed to be the kidnapping victim, was found dead in the truck after the crash. The Malheur County District Attorney's Office plans to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. Monday to reveal more information, state police said.

The names of the people involved have not been released, and it's unclear what charges - if any - the pickup's driver will face. The medical examiner will determine whether the woman in Montwheeler's pickup died from stab wounds or from injuries sustained in the crash.

Highway 201 was closed for six hours during the investigation.
