Justice Watchdog Opens Probe of Comey, FBI Election Actions

Horowitz said in a statement that the probe was spurred by "numerous" requests for his office to examine the matter.

It will cover how the FBI and its director, James Comey, and the Justice Department handled certain aspects of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails, NBC News reported. Clinton and her aides said the disclosure of "new" emails - found on a laptop belonging to Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton aide Huma Abedin - less than two weeks before Election Day hurt her in several battleground states.

Additionally, the probe will investigate allegations that DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation employees improperly disclosed information not meant for the public, and also will probe decisions regarding the timing of the FBI's release of certain Freedom of Information Act documents at the end of October. When critics charged that the agency's decision made no sense, Comey said that the FBI would be reopening the investigation. The FBI later said it would not change its conclusion.

The department added it would investigate whether a top FBI official who has ties to Virginia's Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe should have recused himself in the investigation. Just days before the November 8 election, Comey sent a second letter to Congress saying nothing discovered during the examination of the computer caused them to change their original assessment.
