Baby kidnapped at birth almost 20 years ago found safe

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams, State Attorney Melissa Nelson, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Charles Spencer and others made a major announcement today in finding Kamiyah Mobley alive and well in SC after being kidnapped from a Jacksonville hospital as a newborn 18 years ago.

Kamiyah Mobley was kidnapped from a Jacksonville hospital on July 10, 1998, just hours after her birth.

The kidnapper was captured on surveillance video, but the footage was too blurry to provide assistance to law enforcement.

Williams said over 2,500 tips had come into the JSO or National Center for Missing and Exploited Children over the 18 years since the baby was taken, and even though the detectives working the original case had retired, others never stopped working the case.

Sheriff Mike Williams said the child was found "alive and well" in Walterboro, South Carolina.

Gloria Williams, 51, has been arrested for kidnapping.

Williams will be brought back to Jacksonville to face charges.

Jacksonville police said they believe the victim may have known she was a kidnapping victim. Officials said they took DNA of the girl in SC and compared it to the DNA that was taken when she was a newborn.

Less than 12 hours after Kamiyah was born, a woman posing as a nurse told the girl's mother, Shanara Mobley, she needed to check the baby for a fever.

DNA testing confirmed her identity, but police won't be releasing the identity that she has been living under. He couldn't say if there will be a reunion, which will be up to the 18-year-old. She said it was stressful "to wake up every day knowing that your child is out there, and you have no way to reach her". A swarm of officers searched each floor and room, as well as cars.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing. They said they saw her interact with Mobley just hours before the abduction. The case was also featured on America's Most Wanted.
