Nigerian Man With 103 Wives Dies

Speaking to The Eagle Online, his Personal Assistant, Alhaji Mutairu Salawudeen Bello, confirmed the death of the polygamist.

"He was aged 93 years".

"The Janiza prayer and interment is slated for today by 10am", Bello said.

Marriage-mad Mohammed Bello Abubakar - also known as Baba Masaba - felt he had been gifted with special powers of seduction.

Masaba was said to have slumped on Friday at his residence on Kota-Woro road, Masaba ward in Bida, triggering rumour of his death.

His health, it was learnt, deteriorated after the fall with apprehension high among his followers when he failed to failed to attend the Saturday's morning Islamic teaching, which attracts participants from within and outside Niger State. While the BBC conservatively reports that he had "at least 86", Nigeria's Punch newspaper reports he has married a total of 107 women and divorced 10, meaning that he had 97 wives.

Important Muslims in Nigeria had distanced themselves from Abubakar, claiming his family was nothing more than cult.

Although scholars agreed that it was permitted under the scriptures to marry up to four women, Bello believed that there was no specific cap on the number of wives.

"If God permits me, I will marry more than 86 wives".

"I said I couldn't marry an older man - but he said it was directly an order from God", one of his wives, Ganiat, told the BBC.
