Cavs to sign Derrick Williams

Cavs to sign Derrick Williams

Williams has a limited range from deep but has been a decent threat in the pick and roll during his time with the Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks.

The Cavaliers are signing forward Derrick Williams to a 10-day contract, a league source confirmed to Amico Hoops.

Williams worked to finalize an agreement with the defending National Basketball Association champions after clearing waivers on Wednesday. At 6-foot-8, Williams provides a multi-position defender and scorer.

Given the luxury tax penalty that will be incurred by this signing, it's clear that David Griffin has some hope that Williams will be able to fit in with the Cavs and make an impact.

Williams was released by the Miami Heat on Monday after averaging 5.9 points 2.9 rebounds through 25 games this season.

The Cavs won their fourth straight game on Wednesday at IN and coach Tyronn Lue said it's possible he'll rest LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love against the Thunder. With the emergence of Okaro White, the Heat made a decision to waive Williams.

Williams has also played with Minnesota, Sacramento, and NY in his six-year National Basketball Association career, averaging 9.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
