La La Land: How Many Oscars Did It Win?

La La Land's Damien Chazelle has become the youngest victor of the Best Director prize in the history of the Academy Awards.

With American politics being about divisiveness and the white man's last stand, Hollywood celebrated a story of marginalization and healing as "Moonlight", the dramatic coming-of-age tale of a young, black, gay man, won best picture, and Black America celebrated Gary from Chicago. Till the time of going online, the film had bagged five awards including his Best Director win.

The musical stars Emma Watson and Ryan Gosling in lead roles, and follows a musician Sebastian, and an aspiring actress Mia, who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles.

He is also only the second director ever to collect an Oscar for an original musical, after Vincente Minnelli for Gigi almost 60 years ago. If "La La Land" wins 12 or more Oscars, it'll set a new record for the most wins by any film.

Throughout the evening, it also won the Oscars for production design, cinematography, score and original song.

Chazelle also wrote the screenplay for "La La Land", which is vying to become the first musical in 15 years to win the best picture Oscar.

Others nominated for the award this year were Denis Villeneuve, for "Arrival"; Mel Gibson, for "Hacksaw Ridge"; Kenneth Lonergan, for "Manchester by the Sea"; and Barry Jenkins, for "Moonlight".
