Pro Racer Ashwin Sundar and wife die in tragic accident

While at the accident time they were unable to escape as the vehicle is stuck between the tree and wall. "The oil tubes in front of this particular vehicle broke and because of that, the auto caught fire", Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Abhay Kumar Singh told Express.

According to eyewitnesses, Sundar and his wife had been burnt alive even before the fire department and the police could reach the spot.

The accident comes barely days after the Chennai police had seized ten luxury cars for racing on the East Coast Road. It's sad to see a young racer and his wife losing lives.

A team of policemen arrived at the spot to recover the bodies of the couple who were taken to the hospital and declared dead on arrival.

Sundar, 27, and Nivedhitha, 26, a doctor by profession, unable to open the doors in time and were trapped.

He stated:"I drove against him from 2010-2013 in the Formula Swift category in the JK Tyre National Championship".

In 2012 Sundar lifted the Formula 4 national title. The officer added that the vehicle was burnt beyond recognition and they could identify it as Sundar's auto only through the remains of the number plate.

FMSCI president and former race driver Akbar Ebrahim wrote on his Twitter feed: "It's a sad day for motorsports".

As per police inquiries, the couple lived in Alapakkam near Porur and were returning from their friend's house at MRC Nagar in Raja Annamalaipuram. Ashwin then moved on to the serious auto racing and in 2006 he won the third place in both the Formula LGB Hyundai and Formula LGB and went on to win the National championship (Hyundai and Swift) the next year.
