People 'confused' by bureau's actions past year — FBI's Comey

"We have to care what people think about us", Comey explained during an interview at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

The nation's intelligence agencies said in a January report that Russian efforts to interfere in last year's presidential election included paid social media users, or "trolls".

President Trump gave a mixed message about the future of FBI Director James B. Comey. Part of the goal was to spread information to "denigrate" Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who lost the November election, according to the report.

Comey said he allowed a production team led by Dick Wolf to film inside the New York FBI bureau as a way to lift the curtain of the organization and help improve the FBI's image after a year of intense public scrutiny. In March, Comey said the agency was investigating alleged connections between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government. Comey concluded in July that Clinton was "extremely careless" with State Department emails but did not recommend charges.

"Having taken the extraordinary steps of briefing the public, testifying before Congress about a decision not to prosecute and sharing investigative material, Comey now finds himself wanting to update the public and Congress on each new development in the investigation, even before he and others have had a chance to assess its significance."

The FBI does not generally discuss open or ongoing investigations. "We did a lot previous year that confused people".

"If you see the world through sides, the Federal Bureau of Investigation doesn't make a lot of sense to you 'cause you're saying, 'Why did they help this person?'" and hurt someone else, Comey said. "We really don't care", he said. "We're trying to figure out what's true, what's fair, that's the right thing to do".

The series will be called "Inside the FBI: New York" and is produced by Dick Wolf, the creator of "Law and Order", along with documentarian Marc Levin.
