USA drops 'mother of all bombs' on Islamic State tunnel

While Trump's newfound interventionist attitude was welcomed by hawks in his own party and even some opposition figures, Democrat Representative Jackie Speier voiced concerns over increasing USA military involvement in Afghanistan following Thursday's bombing.

According to CNN, a GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, nicknamed MOAB and also known as the " mother of all bombs" is a 21,600-pound, GPS-guided ammunition that is America's most powerful non-nuclear bomb.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer repeatedly dodged questions about Trump's involvement in and knowledge of the bombing.

There was no immediate comment from the Islamic State group or other militants regarding the US bomb attack. A general goal 1,000-pound MK-83 costs about $12,000. We have given them total authorisation and that's what they're doing and frankly that's why they've been so successful lately.

"We must deny them operational space, which we did", Mr Spicer said. "This is the first time we've head about it from his administration", said Moulton.

"We are very very proud of our military".

The Afghan presidential palace said precautions were taken to avoid civilian casualties.

A spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan did not respond to a query regarding the bomb's effects on its intended target, an Islamic State tunnel complex in Nangahar province.

Other veterans said they agree with Mcghee.

"We have nothing officially on this so far, but the goal this year is to annihilate Daesh in the east and any other part of Afghanistan", ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanesh said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State.

Inamullah Meyakhil, spokesman for the central hospital in eastern Nangarhar province, said the facility had received no dead or wounded from the attack. First used in Vietnam, the C-130-launched BLU-82 was often dropped to turn patches of jungle into helicopter landing zones.

USA and Afghan forces have been fighting the Islamic State in Afghanistan since 2015. ISIS is also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

There are now 8,400 USA troops in the country, conducting counterterrorism operations against insurgents and training and advising Afghanistan's military. The 30-foot-long, 21,600-pound bomb is the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the US military arsenal, capable of destroying an area equal to nine city blocks. Another 6,400 troops from other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries also are in Afghanistan.

Achin is close to the Pakistani border, which has always been used by militants to smuggle weapons and fighters between the two countries.
