North Korea warns against United States 'hysteria' as it marks founder's birth

North Korea on Friday denounced the United States for bringing "huge nuclear strategic assets" to the region as the USS Carl Vinson strike group with a flag-ship nuclear-powered aircraft carrier steamed closer. US Vice President Mike Pence travels to South Korea on Sunday on a long-planned 10-day trip to Asia.

A spokesman for North Korea's military warned on Friday that "the Trump administration's serious military hysteria has reached a risky phase which can no longer be overlooked".

That raised questions about U.S. President Donald Trump's plans for North Korea, which has conducted missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations and unilateral sanctions.

"If the United States wages reckless provocation against us, our revolutionary power will instantly counter with annihilating strike, and we will respond to full-out war with full-out war and to nuclear war with our style of nuclear strike warfare", he said.

"North Korea must have felt the shock wave travelling all the way from Afghanistan", the Communist party-controlled newspaper said in an editorial.

The North's leader, Kim Jong-un, attended the parade in the capital, Pyongyang, as a series of missiles, multiple launch rocket systems and rockets were on display, amid questions about US plans for the country and concerns about a possible sixth nuclear test.

South Korea and the United States say the sole goal of the THAAD is to guard against North Korean missiles, but China says that its powerful radar could penetrate its territory.

South Korea's military said it believed missiles displayed in a North Korean military parade included new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). "So that's why. It's not [North Korea] but the USA and Trump that makes trouble". China has backed North Korea since the peninsula was last at war in the 1950s, in part to prevent having an American ally on its border.

A USA strike may prompt North Korea to immediately unleash artillery fire on Seoul and its surroundings, which is home to just more than half of South Korea's 51 million people, according to a report published by Stratfor a year ago.

He ordered a missile attack on Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack.

In response, the general staff of the North Korean armed forces threatened to launch a strike against United States military bases in Japan and South Korea, as well as the presidential residence in Seoul in case of U.S. aggression. He'll promote the deployment of the Thaad missile-defence system in the region, a move that has annoyed China.

North Korea, still technically at war with the South after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a treaty, has on occasion conducted missile or nuclear tests to coincide with big political events and often threatens the United States, South Korea and Japan.

"North Korea is a problem", Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. "The problem will be taken care of".

Trump has also said the United States is prepared to tackle the crisis without China, if necessary.

The North is aiming its message at China as well as the USA, analysts say. Amid rising regional tensions, Pyongyang residents have been preparing for North Korea's most important hol.

"As I have observed the men and women of this command, it is obvious that we have the right people, in the right place, and trained as a strong team", Brooks said on the site.

"We don't think about other things, we just live in our belief that we will win as long as our Supreme Leader is with us", Ho said, referring to Kim Jong Un.

Even so, China is getting increasingly alarmed at the brinkmanship.

Foreign minister Wang Yi urged all parties on Friday "to stop provoking and threatening each other and not to make the situation irretrievable", according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

"Once a war really happens, the result will be nothing but losing all round and no one could become a victor", Wang said.
