On banner night, Cubs nip Dodgers in ninth

Toles hit his first leadoff homer in his career, helping lead the Dodgers beat Chicago 2-0 on Wednesday night after the Cubs received their championship rings.

Monday night was its own kind of epic, right down to Rizzo dumping one up the left field line with Jon Jay on third, Jay having gotten there on the dime of Sergio Romo, the erstwhile Giants closer. He did, however, throw three wild pitches - two in the third inning - after tossing only two all past year while going 20-7. And they know A thing or two about late inning magic because they have been there before " Kris Bryant said later " in a an interview.

Las Vegas odds makers have the Cubs listed as the favorites in today's game at -144.

Royals 3, A's 1 • Jason Vargas carried a shutout into the eighth, the Royals finally generated some early offense and Kansas City held on to beat visiting Oakland and snap an eight-game skid against the A's.

With the count 1-and-1, Jansen tried to come up and in on Rizzo with his cutter but Rizzo got enough of it to slice an opposite-field single for the walk-off victor.

The Cubs Pitching was excellent. Anibal Sanchez was even worse for the Tigers in relief, allowing six runs in 1 1/3 innings and letting two of Zimmermann's runners score on Kepler's three-run homer in the fifth.

With a runner on first in the ninth and two out, Hector Rondon struck out Toles, but the ball got by Contreras, who then threw wildly to first base. He had six strong innings only letting up four hits and seven strikeouts in the outing.

"We look at our club and we know we're evenly matched", Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. The Reds might be 7-2 now, but that isn't going to last.

Chris Rusin (1-0) pitched the next 31/3 innings, allowing one run and two hits. The inside of the ring also features the world famous billy goat, which cursed the franchise for more than a century. The Ceremony was pushed back due to rain. Fans and media cannot see into the bullpens from the field except through video feeds, but pitchers can see out.

Other than a two hour rain delay, it was another near flawless night on the North Side. As one Cubs fan noted while soaking in the new plaza along Clark before the home opener: "Everything feels different". The Cubs will receive their World Series rings before Wednesday night's game as a group of fans will do the presentation. Prior to that the last time they had won the World Series was 1908. Ross retired after helping the Cubs win the championship last season, and his old teammates cheered the former catcher's performance to "Forever Young", his old walk-up song.

Here's my take, The Cubs got off to a shaky start in St Louis with a loss. "They happened to get there, and this place went nuts". There were a lot of little nuisances in that win for us. Now here's the $64.000 question can they do it. "I had won this contest and... my jaw dropped, I couldn't believe it".

But I will say this in closing. "Without that defense, the game doesn't look anything like that".

SAN FRANCISCO - Buster Posey was doing well and examined for a concussion after he was struck in the helmet during the first inning of San Francisco's 4-1 home-opening win Monday when hit by a 94 miles per hour fastball from Arizona starter Taijuan Walker.

So before we make any postseason predictions, Let me remind you that the season just started, Let's wait until the All-Star Break and then we can talk about predictions for the postseason.
