Colorado Justice Neil Gorsuch's first day on the Supreme Court is today

On Thursday, Missouri's new governor, Eric Greitens, said the state was changing the policy to make churches eligible for grants, and the Supreme Court has asked the two sides to submit pre-argument letters discussing the impact.

At this point, Gorsuch again suggested the simple solution is to just read the words in the statute, but Gorsuch had a relatively novel idea of what a statute means when it says to apply one provision "subject to" another provision of the law.

The judge was also quick to speak up when he felt that he was not getting a direct answer to his questions.

"Wouldn't it be a lot easier if we just followed the plain text of the statute?"

"Where's the ambiguity in "in no event"?"

The case was about federal workers who lost their jobs.

When he wasn't asking questions, Gorsuch sat straight up with a grin on his face, appearing as exuberant as a young child on their first day of school.

In that 2015 decision, Gorsuch was ruling on a case in which prosecutors were attempting to charge a defendant, Philbert Rentz, with two violations for allegedly firing a gun once.

Gorsuch's Senate confirmation returned the Supreme Court to nine Justices more than a year after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

After lunch, the court hears a case that will affect the deadlines for some investor fraud suits in a case involving Lehman Brothers underwriters. In his first case, considering a federal workplace discrimination claim, the newest justice was among the most active of questioners - unusual for the court "rookie". Justice Samuel Alito said to laughter.

"This is unbelievably complicated...." And when Fletcher started to outline the reasons underlying the government's position, Gorsuch pressed Fletcher to explain "where" in the statute the government's proposed rule found support. It is a busy week as the justices will decide whether to add some important cases for next term - they will announce opinions Tuesday and Wednesday and they will hear arguments for the last scheduled sitting of the term.

The Senate has completed its dirty work of confirming Neil Gorsuch as a Supreme Court justice. Sen. "We wish you a long and happy career in our common calling", Roberts said.

"It gives me great pleasure on behalf of myself and my colleagues to welcome Justice Gorsuch as the 101st associate justice of this court", Roberts said in very brief remarks as the court was called to order at 10 a.m. "I appreciate it very much". The closed group had 11 members by noon Monday.

The first of Monday's three one-hour oral arguments is a employment dispute in which a former U.S. Census Bureau worker argues he was forced into retirement against his will. The appeals will be considered again at a conference Friday.
