The Fate of the Furious Beats Star Wars for Record Opening Weekend

It's another successful outing for Dominic Toretto and family, as the eighth instalment in the Fast and Furious franchise, The Fate of the Furious, raced to a global box office record for an opening weekend, collecting an estimated USD532.5 million (about RM 2.35 billion) worldwide. Not only does that set a record, but that beats Star Wars: The Force Awakens' opening weekend tally of $529-million.

"This franchise is showing no sign of wear and tear", said Duncan Clark, Universal International Distribution Chief.

The movie - known as Fast & Furious 8 outside of the U.S. - earned an estimated $432 million overseas, breaking the $316.7 million record previously set by 2015's Jurassic World. "There's not a single place where they didn't like it". "'Fate of the Furious' is satisfying audiences on many different levels". The movie accounted for 75 percent of all show times and 90 percent of the Chinese box office total between April 14 and Sunday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Fate of the Furious has greatly profited from China's speedy expansion in movie theaters in the past years. The first film to debut minus one of the franchise's star actors, Paul Walker, "The Fate of the Furious" took home $532.5 million over the weekend.

"This is an astonishing feat for a decade and a half old franchise that launched as a marginalized auto culture movie with no stars and no imaginings of a long-term franchise future", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore (SCOR).

The numbers are not just good news for the Fast and the Furious franchise, but it also opens doors for other Hollywood films.

It's not a mystery what critics of the Fast and the Furious franchise think - they pretty much shout it from the rooftops every time one of these films is released.

"It's still firing on all cylinders".

Helmed by F Gary Gray, the flick stars Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Michelle Rodriguez in pivotal roles.
