Aaron Hernandez, former New England Patriots star, kills self in prison cell

Many Patriots fans were in disbelief when they heard that former Patriot and convicted murder Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell on Wednesday morning.

Hernandez attempted to barricade his cell door with various items. IN MEMORIAM: Celebrities and notable figures who have recently passed awayHernandez was taken to UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. local time.

In a maximum-security prison outside Boston, about an hour from the stadium where he played alongside stars such as Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, Hernandez jammed the door to his one-man cell lest guards try to stop him and put an early end to the life-without-parole sentence he received for a 2013 murder.

"If those appeals are exhausted, he will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars, so that does give the families, and frankly our office, some consolation", Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said Friday after Hernandez's not guilty verdict. He was life sentenced for his murder in August 2013.

State police were investigating the circumstances of the death of the former rising star in the National Football League, and a coroner was performing an autopsy on Wednesday, April 19.

Hernandez was indicted and charged with both murders, but on April 14, 2017, he was found not guilty in relation to those homicides.

Last week, Hernandez was acquitted in the 2012 drive-by shootings of two men in Boston.

The New England Patriots learned of former tight end Aaron Hernandez's apparent suicide as they prepared to go to the White House to celebrate their fifth Super Bowl title.

Baez believes Hernandez's death could actually be a murder and vows to launch a thorough investigation.

Brian Murphy, Hernandez's former agent Tweeted he didn't believe his former client killed himself. "Chico was not a saint, but my family and I loved him, and he would never take his own life".

Baez won an acquittal last week for Hernandez in the separate 2012 double killing of two men. He said that officials had no concern that Hernandez was planning on taking his own life, and if there was a concern about his well-being, Hernandez would have been transferred to a mental health unit.

Authorities opened an investigation into the death.

"Especially after him getting acquitted of the double murder". Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window.

Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey, who is Hernandez's friend from the University of Florida, was also shocked by the news, posting on Instagram: "Today my heart hurts as I got the worse news I could have imagined".
