Rays vs Red Sox Preview: Rays hope to split series with Boston

It looked a lot like what we've seen so far from Chris Sale.

"It was nearly like blood was in the water", Sox manager John Farrell said.

Wakefield, who now works with NESN, won 186 games with the Red Sox from 1995-2011. The lefty went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while whiffing 12.

Last Aug. 22, Snell gave up fewer runs against Boston - two runs on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings - but wound up with the loss in a 6-2 decision.

The former Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Year is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two career starts against the Red Sox.

BRAVES 5, PADRES 4 Dansby Swanson hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning and host Atlanta, boosted by Freddie Freeman's two home runs, beat San Diego for a four-game sweep in their first series at SunTrust Park. While Rick Porcello has started as impressively as he did a year ago, the reigning CY Young victor may have trouble keeping the award against his new teammate this season.

Just like his previous two starts, Sale received nearly no run support.

Miller broke out of a season long slump going 3-for-4 with a walk. "But as the day went on, before I went out to the bullpen, I told John I felt great and if the situation was there, I wanted it". Getting the proverbial monkey off your back, I guess, is nice. "When you have that, you get pretty comfortable, pretty quick".

This was Sale's 21st 12-strikeout game since the 2012 season - first among all pitchers over that span. Clayton Kershaw has the next most with 13.

Ramirez made an unexpected early entrance and gave up a home run on his initial offering to Mitch Moreland - "I didn't expect he was going to swing at the first one", Ramirez said - but nothing else over four strong innings. The "K" cards are back in center field for Sale. He made a major-league debut in mop-in duty, and a week later he was optioned back to Pawtucket.

The Red Sox wore white home jerseys with "Boston" across the front instead of "Red Sox". But it was also Chris Sale Day at Fenway, an occasion that doesn't go unnoticed.

"He was sharp. He was powerful", Farrell said of his closer.

And that's saying something, considering the average ticket price at Fenway is about $55, the highest in baseball.

Betts extended his streak of plate appearances without a strikeout to 123, the longest active streak in the majors and the longest by a Red Sox hitter since Denny Doyle (159) in 1975. And although details were sketchy, it's fair to assume they are still finding their way as a lineup in the wake of David Ortiz's retirement.

On Monday, that trend continued. But if it does?

Archer, a 19-game loser previous year, beat the Red Sox to start his career way back in 2012 but was 0-11 since, the longest string of futility against Boston since Floyd Bannister's 12-game streak from 1982-86.

"Generally when you lose a guy like that, those games can spiral out of control", Cash said.
