An Animated 'Carmen Sandiego' Series Is Coming To Netflix

Set to debut in 2019, Gina Rodriguez, who now stars in The CW comedy-drama telenovela Jane the Virgin, will voice the title character, while Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler in the Netflix original science fiction-horror series, will provide the voice for Player, Carmen's chief accomplice and friend.

Rodriguez gushed about the news in a series of tweets Tuesday.

The popular Carmen Sandiego series will receive a new animated series, consisting of 20 episodes. The new Carmen Sandiego series will delve into Carmen's past, exploring her origins as she continues her global capers. Rodriguez, who stars in Jane the Virgin, is one of my favorite actresses on TV, and she already has a Golden Globe for her role in the series.

The teenage actor is best known to audiences as Mike Wheeler in Netflix's 2016 breakout success Stranger Things, for which he won a Screen Actors Guild award along with the show's ensemble cast.

Carmen Sandiego originated as a computer game series that later inspired a game show and a television and book series. However, Netflix isn't completely reinventing the wheel - the reboot will also delve into Carmen's past and explore why she became a super thief. In 1994, the character starred in an animated series called "Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?". The live-action and faceless kid sitting at the computer at the beginning and ending of each episode, remember?

Carmen Sandiego is expected to launch on Netflix in 2019, via io9.
