BJD understanding based on 'common bonding of corruption': BJP

Banerjee, however, said it was too early to form a federal front to counter the BJP nationally.

Asked about the threat to regional parties, particularly from the BJP in wake of the Uttar Pradesh assembly poll results, Banerjee shot back "I do not believe that they (BJP) are a threat".

She slammed the BJP for dividing the country over religion, caste and creed. We regional parties do not do that.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday reacted to this meeting and alleged that the understanding reached between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik during their meeting was based on a "common bonding of corruption" while highlighting the Saradha chit-fund scam. "We love regional parties and we want regional parties to persist and grow". But both states are on the BJP's radar and a federal front, by any name, may just have taken baby steps.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, endorsing the Narendra Modi Government's decision to do away with "lal battis" from next month, has got rid of his already. Therefore, I say all regional parties are there. "I knew him and he was fond of me, " she stated. "Don't worry. We have the best of relationship".

Senior BJD MP Tathagat Satpathy today termed the Union Cabinet's decision to remove red beacons from VVIP vehicles as a "joke" even as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dumped the "status symbol" last evening.

The TMC supremo said "I?m deeply honoured that Naveenji gave me time".

Bhubaneswar: Mamata Banerjee and Naveen Patnaik, Chief Ministers of two non-BJP states, met today for 15 minutes and later strenuously denied talking politics.

As neighbouring states, it is good to keep in touch, she said adding "Politics is a continuous process".

Although Naveen tried to downplay their meeting as a "courtesy call", sources said both the leaders discussed strategies on how to check the growth of the BJP in eastern India, especially in West Bengal and Odisha.
