Braves streak ends with 3-1 loss to Nationals

It was Harper's second ho.

Scherzer, the Parkway Central High and Mizzou product, got an inning-ending double play to work around his only serious trouble in the fourth. Scherzer sacrificed Difo to second, and the runner scored on Adam Eaton's single up the middle.

Washington broke through the very next inning.

The Atlanta Braves said they needed a brand new ballpark to get people to watch them lose in person, but it turns out they're just like my 91-year-old grandfather's large intestine: full of shit.

Harper drove in five runs. Ryan Zimmerman also hit a grand slam and the Nationals had 20 hits. Nationals SS Trea Turner (strained right hamstring) is eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday, but he'll have a rehab stint in the minors.

"You just listen to your arm", he said. "I didn't have it at all". I'd imagine that we're going to see a few more shots like that as the season progresses. "That's a good thing moving forward, because I was still sharp in the seventh". But it's a long season.

This time, there was no doubt the game was over - though Washington's Jayson Werth continued to gripe at Bucknor as the umpires left the field. He appeared to suffer the injury on a check swing. His status is day to day, according to manager Dusty Baker.

Angels 5, Astros 2 • Albert Pujols hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning to help visiting Los Angeles snap a six-game skid. Atlanta C Tyler Flowers (right hamstring) was expected to be available to play the field again on Wednesday. Inciarte jammed his left wrist when he fell in the outfield during batting practice but remained in the lineup.

"I knew where I was at physically, and he thought I was done", the pitcher said. Right-handers Shawn Kelley and Koda Glover will share the job. Treinen, who has a 7.11 ERA with three saves in four chances, will shift to a setup role.

Going into his third plate appearance of the night, Freeman is hitting.438/.534/.938. He's reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances, the longest such streak for the Braves since Jason Heyward reached base in 10 straight in August 2010. Freeman had a run-scoring single in the eighth. Only Jeff Burroughs (11 in 1978) has a longer streak for Atlanta. The Braves did not immediately have records for that statistic from their time in Boston and Milwaukee. Umpires are human and, thus, will make mistakes every now and then, but that's a particularly outrageous call that's just about inexcusable for a big league umpire.

The Nationals were livid over the call, which wasn't subject to a video review.

The next home series will begin on May 1 against the New York Mets. The Nationals beat Dickey and the Blue Jays 2-0 on June 2, 2015.
