Colorado Now Has a Drive-Thru Marijuana Shop

The first drive-thru pot shop in the country is opening in Colorado, just in time for the annual "high holiday" of 4/20. The shop, owned by Mark Smith, is located in the western Colorado town of Parachute.

"I've been driving by the vehicle wash building a lot".

Local marijuana dispensary Tumbleweed chose to cave to requests for marijuana after dark when the auto wash across the street went up for sale.

The project, reportedly hatched one evening while working alone in his shop, could establish Smith in his own small way as an innovator in the burgeoning marijuana industry.

"I didn't set out thinking this would be national news. You really need something structured for a drive-thru bay, and the auto wash was ideal because it had drive-thru features to it".

Smith said he was taken aback by all the attention.

"We think the drive-through is a very creative and innovative idea", Parachute Town Manager Stuart McArthur told the Post Independent in February. That means no one under 21 will be allowed, even if hey are in the back seat of a auto. "A lot of things lined up", he said. The drive-thru will be open 4 midnight Thursday through Sunday.

Back in June 2015, the decision to repeal Parachute's ban on marijuana establishments was met with months of controversy, including failed votes to recall town councilors and to repeal the ordinance.

Almost 30 percent of the town's tax receipts in 2016 were from marijuana sales, down from the previous year, showing that neighboring businesses are growing because of the new industry. But Smith has no problem super-sizing an order.
