Huntington waits on grand prize victor announcement in America's Best Communities competition

Madison was the only IN city to make the finals of the three-year-long competition. Williams and other city officials were in Denver, Colorado to present the city's revitalization plans to a panel of judges.

While the city was a finalist, it was not named in the top three. The sponsors announced the winners at the Wednesday ceremony.

The Hal Greer Health Innovation Corridor aims to transform the Hal Greer Boulevard gateway and Fairfield neighborhood by replacing dilapidated public housing with commercial and residential redevelopment, street improvements and enhancing Cabell Huntington Hospital's role as a regional center for health care jobs and healthy lifestyles. The city's revitalization plan focuses on the Madison Connector, a multipurpose trail created to connect its historic downtown and hilltop area.

"They're dealing with those problems head on with aggression and innovation", he said.

For more information on the competition, visit the America's Best Communities Facebook page. The eight finalists include: Chicago Lakes Area, Minnesota; Darrington/Arlington, Washington; Huntington, West Virginia; Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Madison, Indiana; Statesboro, Georgia; Tualatin, Oregon; and Valley County/Meadows Valley, Idaho.

"The next 5-7 years are going to be absolutely incredible because of what we've done in these three years".

All the prize money will go toward the city's revitalization plan.

West End revitalization will continue the city's River-to-Rail initiative to renew Huntington's West End as well as rejuvenating the Central City commercial district along 14th Street West by improving building facades, streetscapes and green infrastructure improvements.
