Sale cruised through eight innings, allowing just four hits and one walk but was pulled after throwing 102 pitches for closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning.

And he wasn't the only one. Not to be outdone, Sale mysteriously threw four balls in a row to Steve Pearce in the fourth inning following a Justin Smoak single, putting a runner in scoring position for old favorite Jarrod Saltalamacchia. And so far, Bautista is not doing a lot of anything. Morales has had the normal struggles against the ace, hitting just.200/.231/.480 over 26 plate appearances, but he does have two home runs, which is of some comfort.

As someone who has speculated before about management's path to a rebuild, the unexpectedly bad start to this season does provide the opportunity to begin the kind of roster turnover that they might have been reluctant to undertake. "I caught myself guessing a couple of times and normally that's not what I do when I'm at the plate".

Mariners 10, Marlins 5: Rookie Mitch Haniger extended his hitting streak to 13 games with three hits and four RBIs, and Seattle beat Miami for its fifth win in six games.

"That could mean a number of different things, but keeping it simple always helps", he said.

The bats have been mostly to blame for the early struggles.

The final game of the series is set for Thursday, April 20 at 12:37 p.m. "We've just got to flat out play better and do it all on the same day".

Manager John Farrell notes the weather hasn't been particularly conducive to hitting the long ball, either, with mostly chilly temperatures at Fenway Park. But he's out there battling. You want to be good.

The Blue Jays have dropped each of their first five series, leading to the worst 15-game start in team history.

Beltran's shot came with one out and the first inning off Matt Shoemaker (0-1), and Marisnick's second homer this season made it 2-0 in the fifth. In total, Boston pitchers recorded 18 strikeouts.

CLEARWATER, FL - MARCH 6: Dave Cash throws out a ceremonial first pitch before the Philadelphia Phillies play against the Washington Nationals March 6, 2013 at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida.

"I mean, it's April. He's very deceptive too".

In fact, it was both team's closers - two of the best in baseball - who let down their starters on Thursday.

The game was scoreless until the top of the ninth inning, when Xander Bogaerts poked a two-out, RBI double down the right-field line to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. With a 12.31 K/9 and 1.25 ERA prior to today's game, he was already enjoying a stellar season and still found a way to improve upon it. Kimbrel struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to end the game and earn the victory.

It was only the third game in the 24 seasons of the Rangers' ballpark to go to extra innings scoreless.

Marcus Stroman remains the lone Jays starter to have a win this season, but he was in no danger of getting a second on Tuesday night. Get away from the disappointed crowds, meddling media and all that.

"I'm not proud of the last two days and the way I've looked, because my approach hasn't been consistent", he said.

"Honestly I think the only way I think you can shake it off is to take one in the face before that", Johnson said. "But you look at the names we have here and you start thinking 'how is this happening with a lineup like that and a staff like what we have and a good bullpen.' It's weird".

"It's surprising, but anything is possible and we're facing pretty good teams", Bautista said. "But it's a long trip to Anaheim, maybe we'll clear our minds".

He also picked up a pair of stolen bases, the Jays' first two stolen bags of the season.
