Pence says seeks fairer trade with Indonesia

As the USA response to the threat of North Korea takes shape under President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence has already been deployed to the region.

Indonesia is on Trump's trade hit list of nations that he considers the losing out to in trade, and USA company Freeport-McMoran Inc., which operates the world's largest copper mine in the Indonesian province of Papua, is in a protracted dispute with the Indonesian government. As for cooperation in economic and structural policies, Aso said the two countries will "closely work together through discussion on worldwide economic and financial situations surrounding Japan and the U.S".

"The policy of President Trump is to marshal the support of our allies in the region - Japan, South Korea, nations around the world, and China", Pence said.

Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday promised North Korea that the USA military would make an "overwhelming and effective" response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons. Soon after Trump took office, he pulled the USA out of the TPP - which needed all the signatory nations to ratify the deal.

"The leader of North Korea again recklessly tried to provoke something by launching a missile", he said.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is on board an American aircraft carrier stationed in Japan amid heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula. On Wednesday, Pence is scheduled to visit the U.S. Navy's Yokosuka base and give a lecture in Tokyo.

Behind the heated rhetoric, Trump's strategy in the region looks somewhat similar to predecessor Barack Obama's - albeit with the added unpredictability of a new president who has shown he's willing to use force. "That's what being undermined here with a president who thrives on's going to eat away at the fundamental credibility of the United States role in Asia".

"Despite the strong economic ties between the United States and South Korea, we have to be honest about where our trade relationship is falling short", Pence said.

"A strong U.S. militarily, economically and diplomatically is vitally important to this region and all who call it home", said Mr Pence.

"The United States is proud to partner with Indonesia". President Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the 12-country trade agreement after his inauguration in January.

He also said the era of over-regulation "is over" and Trump aims to bring in a new era of jobs and growth.

China expressed concern on April 19 over comments made by North Korean officials warning of further missile tests and the possibility of nuclear war.

Pence, his wife Karen and two daughters walked inside the main hall of colorful Senso-ji temple Tuesday as incense burned.

It was Pence's second stop on the trip, which will later take him to Australia and Indonesia. And the vice president believes American voters will be able to pinpoint accomplishments as it reflects on the administration's first 100 days. Tillerson told reporters that Washington was reviewing the possibility of reinstating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.

"When the president says all options are on the table, all options are on the table", said Pence. He affirmed the US commitment to her longstanding relationship with Japan.

The announcement followed an inaugural meeting Tuesday of the U.S. -Japan Economic Dialogue in Tokyo chaired by visiting U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso.

It said the dialogue would focus on three areas: trade and investment rules and issues, cooperation in macroeconomic policy and specific industry sectors.

Trump's withdrawal from the deal was a setback for leaders of other TPP countries who invested political capital in fighting to get it ratified, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"We're already seeing our allies in South Korea and Japan and the wider world standing behind us, but China is taking unprecedented steps to economically isolate North Korea and given the fact that China represents more than 80% of the exports from North Korea is enormously important", Pence said.

From two continents, Pence and Defense Secretary James N. Mattis warned that North Korea's latest failed missile launch was a reckless act of provocation and assured allies in Asia that the USA was ready to work to achieve a peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
