Lowell police: Man shot, woman assaulted

A couple who arranged to make a drug deal in Lowell early Wednesday both ended up in the hospital after the man was wounded by a shotgun blast and the woman was beaten so badly police believed she had been shot in the head.

Police were called to the Tedeschi's Convenience Store on Bridge Street and found a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound.

The names of the victims were not released by Lowell police, which is investigating.

Crowley said both victims are from out of town and "made arrangements to make a drug transaction with a dealer who wanted to meet them on Read Street in the city". The victim ran two blocks to 7-Eleven for help, according to police.

Both suspects fled the area in what police described as "an unknown motor vehicle". They began to attack her, and police said the male victim ran to assist his friend.

The parking lot was blocked off with police caution tape. The pickup truck at Third and Read streets was eventually towed.

Other details were not immediately available.

They say they called police from a nearby restaurant and then rushed back to where the man was standing. Tipsters can remain anonymous, but can receive up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
