New Jersey teenage girl shows up for prom in coffin

New Jersey high school student Megan Flaherty, who hopes to become a funeral director, surprised her classmates by arriving at her prom in an open prop coffin. Also, while we're here and talking about this, a girl in New Jersey showed up to her prom in a coffin.

She said her entrance one-upped her brother, who previously arrived at prom in a hearse, but didn't make use of a coffin.

Her dramatic arrival prompted outrage from some critics, who branded her actions "classless and distasteful".

And, while many teens would have disagreed to join her on her elaborate entrance, her prom date was fine with the idea.

The backlash grew so heated Megan's mother, Susan Flaherty, posted an explanation to Facebook, saying her daughter meant "no disrespect".

"Megan decided about a year ago that this is the profession she will enter into".

However, she's not the first to hitch a ride in a hearse to prom.

The teen's mom explained one of her close friends is a local funeral director, and both their families often spend time together. "I'm a quiet person in school, so people didn't expect it", she said.

"No disrespect meant. just a celebration of knowing what she wants to do with her life after graduation and of course, celebrating Junior Prom".
