24 killed in wall collapse, Rajasthan orders probe

At least 22 persons were killed and 30 injured when the wall of a marriage hall collapsed in Bharatpur district late on Wednesday.

The guests had reportedly sought shelter in a tin shack from heavy rain when the wall caved in on the shack on the night of Wednesday, May 10.

But the district administration and Municipal Corporation have no answer as to why this illegal marriage garden was allowed to host functions. The deceased, including eight women and five children, were eating food at the stalls near the wall when the incident occurred.

He added that a survey of all marriage homes and gardens in Bharatpur would soon be conducted to review safety and security measures. "If government finds them, we will take action against them", said Raje.

The owner of the wedding hall was arrested for "culpable homicide not amounting to murder" after the incident, superintendent of police Anil Tank told CNN, and others involved with the building are being investigated.

A marriage function was going on in the hall, where at least 800 people had gathered, when the storm hit the area yesterday.

He said the entire wall and the shed collapsed and they got trapped. Several are said to be critically injured.

A wall collapse at a wedding in India killed 24 people and injured 28 more at the venue in Bharatpur during a strong, windy storm. State government will give Rs 2 lakh to each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured apart from assistance announced by the Centre.
