Colbert has 'something special' in mind for Trump after Comey firing

Similarly, both parties' leaders on the House Intelligence Committee, Reps.

Michael McFaul, Obama's ambassador to Russian Federation, pointed out that the White House press corps had been allowed in to hear the opening remarks from Obama and Lavrov in 2009.

Ultimately, Comey's firing seemed to reflect Trump's frustration that Comey, in pursuing the investigation, was being "disloyal" to Trump.

"I was going to fire Comey", Trump said. Comey, who was traveling on bureau business in Los Angeles at the time, reportedly learned of his firing from media reports and was read Trump's letter firing him over the phone.

TRUMP: Yeah, well, they also.

In mentioning the Russian Federation probe as part of his rationale, Trump seemed to contradict White House claims that Comey was sacked for his handling of the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's email practices, which ended past year. The Justice Department denied reports that Rosenstein threatened to resign over the dispute.

In New York, where Comey once headed the US attorney's office in Manhattan, agents were told stories about the former director, including how he used to call agents' cell phones to congratulate them after finishing big cases, said a current official.

Even before the furor over the firing of Comey, the Republican president's popularity was already dropping. "It is done, and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply".

This is not to say that political considerations will determine the course of events more than the facts that eventually emerge; if it turns out there is no evidence of collusion in the Russia-Trump investigation, then the president is not going to be hounded out of office for acting as though there was. Mr Trump said when beckoning Mr Comey at a January meeting, sending an air-kiss his way. Jack Eckenrode, a former special agent in charge of the FBI's Philadelphia division, said the administration "will be hard-pressed to find someone who possesses his unique combination of personal qualities as well as his respect for the rule of law".

At the same time, the administration has previously stated that Trump fired Comey on recommendations from the Justice Department.

TRUMP: I just want somebody that's competent. "But we had a very nice dinner. I look forward to receiving the IG's findings".

Trump distanced himself from those who worked for his presidential campaign, however. But I told myself, I have to do the right thing for the American people. Personally. I'm not talking about campaigns.

He replied: "I was never representing then-candidate Trump and I had no negotiations - particularly anything to do with what was falsely accused in the dodgy dossier".

Trump told Holt that "when I chose to do it, I said to myself... this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story".

McCabe, who was Comey's deputy, declined to confirm those conversations at the Senate hearing.

He said he could not comment on an ongoing investigation.

"And there will be lots of questions that come out of that", Hosko said.

Trump had said he acted based on the recommendations of Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

When I did this now, I said I probably maybe will confuse people.

Several congressional panels are also investigating Russia's role in the election.
