While local media outlet Beritasatu.com has reported the find is a giant squid, others suspect it could be a whale or even an elephant.

A dead unknown sea animal has been found washed up on an island in Indonesia.

He initially mistook the vast bloated mass for a stranded boat.

Some local fishermen believe the creature to be a giant squid, while some speculate it to be a giant octopus.

The marine department has taken the samples of meat for laboratory tests to identify the species and the tests are underway, coordinator M Nasrul Latulanit said.

Weighing two tons and measuring nearly 7m in length, locals speculated the creature was some sort of undiscovered dugong. One local shared images and videos of the carcass found on Huamual beach in west Maluku province.

The monster has started to decay prompting residents to urge the government to have its remains quickly removed. Separated from tissue, the underlying jaw of the sperm whale looks what contains sharp teeth, while decomposition would cause the creature's intestines to be pushed out of its mouth, making them look like tentacles.
