Adrian Martinez, No. 32 overall prospect, commits to Tennessee

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Martinez gave Tennessee its 10th known commitment for the 2018 class and its second from a quarterback, joining three-star quarterback Michael Penix of Tampa, Fla. "I formed a really good connection with (Tennessee quarterbacks) coach (Mike) Canales and coach (Butch) Jones". They really made me feel like a priority and stuck with me and were consistent throughout the whole process.

"Being given the opportunity to kind of lead a team to a national championship, being able to compete for SEC championships, national championships is ultimately what I want to do", Martinez said.

And while the Clovis West High School product had offers from schools such as Oklahoma, Alabama, Miami and OR, he opted for the Vols because of the connection he formed with the program. This week, Martinez informed Jones and the staff that his decision was made to suit up for the Orange & White.

"Oh, they were pretty pumped up", the Scout four-star quarterback prospect said.

He admitted he had to get past "some hurdles, as far as the distance and possibly changes that could happen", but he's already looking forward to being "kind of the face" of the Vols' 2018 recruiting class. One look at Tennessee was all it took for Martinez to decommit from Cal (he decommitted upon returning home), as the allure of playing in the SEC proved to be too much for the California native. Tennessee is already off to a tremendous start on that front as 247 Sports now ranks the Vols as the eighth-best recruiting class in the country (second best in the SEC). With his commitment, the Vols latest recruiting class is really beginning to stack up on the offensive side of the ball.

The right-hander doesn't have any trips set up to visit any programs aside from Tennessee.

"I really plan on shutting things down", Martinez said. So I didn't really see it as necessary. I feel like everything I want and needed is at the University of Tennessee. "So I decided with my family that it was best not to make any trips anywhere else".

Martinez is coming off a junior campaign in which he passed for 2,484 yards and 25 touchdowns. On the ground, he accumulated 1,385 yards and 16 more scores. Top Mississippi defensive back Jaylon Reed soon followed those commitments and gave his own verbal pledge to join the Tennessee class. He presently has plans to major in Business or Finance. As long as I work hard and do the right things and go about it the right way, I think I can achieve it.
