Mom out with daughter on Mother's Day killed by vehicle

Diane Aluska, 55, pushed her 16-year-old daughter, Jenna, from the path of a Toyota Corolla barreling toward them in reverse in Lindenhurst, authorities said Sunday.

Diane was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where she was pronounced dead.

"She did not put the auto in a drive, thought she had, and hit the gas", Murphy said. Her daughter was treated for her injuries and is not likely to die. But Aluska wound up pinned beneath the vehicle. Witnesses pushed the vehicle off of her, police said.

Investigators say the Toyota was backing out of a diagonal parking spot when it backed onto the sidewalk, struck the mother and daughter, and then crashed into the Lindenhurst Fire House.

Diane was given CPR but died at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. Jenna and Riolo were both treated at the same hospital for non-life-threatening injuries

The driver, Ann Riolo, 80, of Lindenhurst, was also injured, police said. Her 16-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as was the driver of the vehicle.

The street was strewn with rolls from the bakery and carnation flowers.

Investigators say the crash appears to have been a tragic accident, and criminal charges are not expected. The Corolla was impounded for a safety check and the investigating is continuing.
