4th win in a row, 7-2 victory

4th win in a row, 7-2 victory

Smoak had three hits, including a solo home run, and a walk for the Blue Jays (14-21), who have won two games in a row for only the third time this season.

They can ask the Seattle Mariners that the break-even point can be elusive.

Ryan Tepera (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 ideal innings to earn the win as the Blue Jays (17-21) completed a four-game sweep of the Mariners (17-21). He's also the first Toronto centre fielder to hit a walk-off since Vernon Wells did it in July 2006.

"You can't say enough good things about how Kevin is playing", Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. Balls are starting to leave the ball park. Smoak's adjustments and positive mindset are a major benefit for the team, considering they seem to be content with the two-year, $8.5 million contract extension they signed him to last season.

"And we're getting some breaks along the way".

First things first, for a Jays team that can not afford to look too far ahead, nor get over confident with any opponent, was Thursday's assignment. "But through a tough stretch, everybody starts pressing".

The Jays are well aware that there's plenty of climbing left to get back in contention, but at least the ascent appears to have started in earnest.

Rangers 5, Padres 2: Mike Napoli's second homer was a game-ending three-run shot as Texas beat San Diego.

"We all believed it was just a matter of time", Gibbons said.

Be proactive - Use the "Flag as Inappropriate" link at the upper right corner of each comment to let us know of abusive posts. He capped off a three-hit night with the walk-off victor. "But something clicks inside and for some reason their timing lines up right".

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are 6-2 in their last eight Sunday games, and 0-6 in their last six games versus a left-handed starter.

The Mariners lost another game and another starting pitcher Saturday.

The Seattle Mariners are 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position in the first two games - both losses - in a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

"He's a little bit more aggressive early in the count", said Gibbons, of his current cleanup hitter.

The Blue Jays tacked on two more runs in the eighth off James Pazos, who got minimal help from his teammates on defense with an error, a missed tag on a pickoff and a double steal. There is no guarantee that Cano, who has been hot with the bat, will be able to play Saturday.

"I thought he hung in there fine", Servais said. "That's part of it. You've got to keep grinding".

OF Ezequiel Carrera was 2-for-5 with an RBI on Saturday in the 7-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

After going deep just twice in his first 33 games, Bautista has homered three times in four games. He had only one strikeout but did induce three double-play grounders. He also took extra bases away from Danny Valencia with a leaping catch in center field in the fourth inning.

Ryan Weber is expected to make the start for the Mariners, although it had not been listed officially.

The Mariners led 1-0 when they pulled starter Ariel Miranda after a leadoff walk in the sixth inning pushed him to 100 pitches.

Despite his command issues, Liriano was solid in April after a shaky first start of the season.

Mariners: RHP Christian Bergman (0-0, 2.45 ERA) will make his first start of the season.

Just to put his season in perspective, Smoak actually has more RBIs than former Blue Jays' slugger Edwin Encarnacion - ironic considering his departure was a heartbreak for fans and the team. Seattle claimed RHP Casey Lawrence on waivers from Toronto, recalled LHP Zac Curtis from Double-A Arkansas and optioned RHP Dan Altavilla to Triple-A Tacoma.
