The President repeatedly said it was time to move on from the Russian Federation probe, and get back to the business of the nation.

He feels no compulsion now to talk about what he is doing after his resignation, he said, though he said he is talking to organizations to figure out what post-congressional life will look like. Early on in his time in Congress, he co-sponsored bills to tighten "family reunification" visa-issuance and reexamine birthright citizenship. "That said, I have made a personal decision to return to the private sector".

After careful consideration and a long discussion with his wife, Chaffetz, a Republican, wrote in a letter to constituents, "the time has come for us to move on from this part of our life".

I would be remiss not to mention the great men and women who have served in my office, both in Washington and here in the District. "But when you like what you do and you enjoy your job, but you love your family, at some point you have to make a choice". Gary Herbert says he will call a special election to fill Rep.

The chairman of the House oversight and government reform committee, Jason Chaffetz, is leaving Congress on June 30, the Utah Republican announced Thursday.

"Just because there is an investigation or work done at the Department of Justice doesn't excuse the Congress from doing its own work and getting to the bottom of things", Chaffetz said.

"I think the Clinton email investigation is still not complete, and it is of such importance to the nation", he says. So there's always something going on.

Multiple Steering Committee members said they had been contacted by Gowdy, Dennis Ross (Fla.) and Steve Russell, R-Okla., about their interest in the post.

Chaffetz won re-election to a fifth term by wide margins over his Democratic opponent in November.

Members of Congress reportedly urged Gowdy to run for the chairmanship after Chaffetz announced several weeks ago that he would retire from Congress. Gowdy's spokeswoman did not confirm the congressman's intent to take Chaffetz's post, but lawmakers reportedly said he would win if he ran, Politico reported on Thursday.

At first, the leading theory was that Chaffetz wanted to run for the Utah governor's seat in 2020.

"I have not seen any evidence of actual collusion", Chaffetz said. "And a lot of people will never ever believe that, but that is the truth".
