Chelsea Manning reveals new look after prison release

A day after her release from a Kansas prison, Chelsea Manning tweeted the first image of herself since saying in 2013 that she identifies as a female, following a conviction of contravening the U.S. Espionage Act, among other charges.

"Okay, so here I am everyone!"

The transgender soldier formerly known as Bradley Manning posted a picture of herself with short-cropped hair and bright red lipstick to Twitter and Instagram on Thursday.

Manning was released early Wednesday after serving seven years of a 35-year sentence for the largest breach of classified information in US history. She twice tried to commit suicide and faced long stretches of solitary confinement as well as denial of healthcare, Strangio said.Last year, the U.S. Defence Department lifted a long-standing ban against transgender men and women serving openly in the military. She began her gender transition while in prison, although she had made appearances as a woman since as early as 2010. Manning wrote alongside a photograph of sneaker-clad feet that she published on social media.

After being released from prison, Manning took to Instagram to celebrate her freedom.

"Pvt. Manning is statutorily entitled to medical care while on excess leave in an active duty status, pending final appellate review", said Army Spokesperson Dave Foster.
