Democrats demanded the White House turn over recordings, if they exist, of the president's conversations with Comey.

The denials came hours after Trump issued a warning to the FBI Director he fired days earlier: "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

"That was a DOJ decision", White House spokesman Sean Spicer said, laying the impetus for the memo building the case for Comey's firing on Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The president's original dismissal letter to Comey indicated that he was being fired for his handling of the Clinton email probe.

Trump, unsatisfied with Comey's initial response, returned to the topic later during the dinner.

The White House also shifted its stance on whether Comey's termination had anything to do with the Russian Federation investigation, at first saying it was not linked.

Describing himself as a "very active president", Trump said it was becoming very hard for his surrogates to explain things with ideal accuracy to reporters at the news conferences. Before Trump sent out his tweet about Comey, he suggested that the White House might cancel press briefings after he and his surrogates contradicted each other on multiple occasions over the reasoning behind Comey's firing.

Trump told U.S. news network NBC in a televised interview that he asked Comey on three separate occasions whether he was personally targeted in the ongoing investigation, remarks that raised allegations of presidential interference in the investigation.

"I've talked to the president", said Spicer.

This could be viewed as an effort to intimidate Comey, a potential witness in an investigation into Trump and his campaign. Comey declined and said that he would be "honest" with the president.

At a hearing on Capitol Hill on Thursday, the acting Federal Bureau of Investigation director Andrew McCabe contradicted White House claims that Mr Comey had lost the support of rank-and-file staff. Trump's aides had floated the idea of moving the media from the White House to the nearby Executive Office Building to accommodate media interest.

A California Democrat explained live on CNN the trouble with believing anything said by President Donald Trump.

Slamming the media, Trump said, "The Fake Media is working overtime today!"

"In fact when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won", he said.
