France's new government announced

President Emmanuel Macron recruited Republican lawmaker Bruno Le Maire as finance minister, scoring a victory in his effort to draw support from the France's mainstream right and assigning a fluent German speaker to rebuild economic credibility in Europe.

He shifted to the right during the conservative primaries, taking a tough stance on law and order and national identity issues.

The Republican party said it is expelling all three.

Popular Socialist Jean-Yves Le Drian had barely left his post of defense minister under President Francois Hollande when he was handed the vital portfolio of foreign affairs and Europe.

Nicolas Hulot is a prominent environmental campaigner and documentary journalist whose television series promotes environmentalism while showing off lovely landscapes.

Tuesday Pope Francis sent a telegram to the new President of France, Emmanuel Macron, offering his prayers and wishes that in his new role, he will support the rich moral and spiritual traditions of the country, including that of Christianity. Gerald Darmanin, also a Republicans politician, was named public accounts minister.

"In government, you will see that a lot of the inner circle will drop out", Christophe Castaner, Mr Macron's campaign spokesman, told journalists on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony.

His first government is comprised of half men and half women, a mix of experienced politicians from a wide range of parties and newcomers from civil society.

Sylvie Goulard takes defence, Muriel Penicaud becomes Labour Minister and Agnes Buzyn is Health Minister.

France's new sports minister is one of the country's most decorated sportswomen, with five Olympic medals and six world championships under her belt.

Mr Philippe began his political life as a Socialist activist affiliated to the former prime minister Michel Rocard while he was a student, before turning to the right. "Now let's get to work".

Edouard Philippe was born on November 28, 1970.

Macron and Merkel have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the European Union and Merkel strongly applauded Macron's election.

Some could be replaced after next month's parliamentary election, depending on how many seats Macron's fledgling Republique En Marche (REM) party wins.

He is to meet with European Council president Donald Tusk on Wednesday before announcing the new French government.

The meeting was pushed back at the last-minute from its scheduled time of midday until the evening.

Speaking as the new president prepared to name the rest of his government later in the day, Francois Baroin, election campaign leader of The Republicans (LR) party which is being torn apart by Macron's divide and conquer tactics, said on BFM TV Philippe had "made a choice which is not ours".

Macron, who ran a staunchly pro-European campaign, kept with tradition by visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday in his first trip overseas after taking office.
