President Trump says he is worst-treated politician in history

Though Mr Trump has the worst ratings of any new president on record-less than 40% of Americans approve of him-most Republican voters are still behind him.

Putin, who still hopes Moscow can fix battered ties with the United States despite a deepening political scandal in the United States related to Trump's purported Russian Federation ties, said Moscow had rated Lavrov's meeting with Trump highly.

Leaders in the Republican Party have been on the defensive during three days of explosive news stories about President Donald Trump's White House, but House Speaker Paul Ryan tried to send a unifying message on behalf of the GOP on Thursday. "Our job is to be responsible, sober and focus only on gathering the facts".

Trump is the head of the executive branch, yes, but he is now a nominal employee of the entire country.

Though Republican lawmakers have so far generally backed Trump, a new mood was evident on Capitol Hill, a Politico report commented.

President Putin deployed his trademark sarcasm on Wednesday to make clear he thought the accusation that Trump had divulged secrets absurd. Trump's White House counsel, Donald McGahn, was a Jones Day partner who served as the general counsel to his presidential campaign.

The appointment, following fresh controversy over the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, was hailed by politicians on both sides of the aisle, as well as members of the security community.

"Let's not panic here", congressman James Comer said. Trump defended himself as acting appropriately, but at least two Democratic House members and one Republican have raised impeachment.

Second, the president would face trial in the Senate.

Republican leaders in the House and Senate are pledging a thorough investigation of Trump's firing last week of FBI Director James Comey, along with revelations that the president disclosed classified information to the Russians and asked Comey to back off a sensitive investigation.

Russian state agency Tass quickly posted pictures that have since become infamous, of Mr Trump, Mr Lavrov and Mr Kislyak smiling and apparently sharing jokes, at a time when Russia had been accused by USA intelligence of interfering in last year's U.S. election and the May 7 French presidential election as well. "I hope you can let this go", referring to the Flynn investigation.

"We are witnessing an obstruction of justice case unfolding in real time", said Sen.

Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, tweeted: '@GOPoversight is going to get the Comey memo, if it exists.

Lawmakers won't be the only ones seeking Comey's memos.

"White House leadership will be important in order to pass tax reform, and the administration's ability to lead politically is greatly in doubt", they write.

The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Jason Chaffetz, has said he will ask Mr Comey to testify next week.

Flynn was sacked on February 13 after it was revealed he had misled Vice President Pence about his conversations with Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak about U.S. sanctions recently imposed on Russia; Flynn had been speaking with Kislyak during the transition period between Election Day and Trump's inauguration.

The intensifying drama comes as Trump is set to embark Friday on his first foreign trip, which had been optimistically viewed by some aides as an opportunity to reset an administration floundering under an inexperienced president. But the White House has provided differing accounts of the firing.

Comey's dismissal sent shockwaves through Washington, with critics accusing the president of trying to thwart the FBI investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the U.S. election and any Moscow ties to Trump associates. That was the White House's position initially after the deputy attorney general argued in a memo that Comey had erred in handling the FBI's investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's private email server, even though Trump had praised Comey on the campaign trail past year.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity".
