Referee Steinhaus promoted as 1st women in Bundesliga

Bibiana Steinhaus will become the first female referee to take charge of Bundesliga games next season after being promoted to the pool of top-flight officials on Friday.

"Bibiana Steinhaus has been one of the world's best referees for many years, and has proved to be one of the top-ranked judges in Germany in recent Bundesliga matches", said Deutscher Fussball-Bund Vice President Ronny Zimmermann. And now, Steinhaus has made history with her promotion to the German top flight.

Steinhaus has been a referee for 18 years and has overseen matches in the second tier of German football since 2011.

Asked how she felt about the news, Steinhaus told the DFB website: "Disbelief, joy, happiness, relief, curiosity, I do not know". It was simply a turbulent roller coaster ride of emotions.

"My dream has always been to referee professional football matches. It acts as a confirmation of the hard work I have done to get here and an even greater incentive to keep working harder to go further", Steinhaus said.

"That this dream will come true naturally fills me with joy".

"Of course, I'm aware that I will be the first (female referee) in the Bundesliga and, especially at the beginning of the new season, will face particular attention from the public and the media".

"I would hope that the current developments will also have a positive impact on newcomers [female referees], or those who want to become one".
