In late morning trading, the benchmark S&P 500 was up about a third of a percent.

Some estimates suggest the world's top 500 billionaires lost $35 billion wealth on Wednesday's 1.8 per cent slump in the United States equity indices. "I hope you can let this go".

This was the original reason provided by the White House in the immediate wake of Comey's dismissal, but two days later Trump revealed in a NBC interview: "It was set up a while ago".

According to the Times, the White House has declined to comment on whether transition officials were aware of the Flynn investigation before Trump's inauguration.

Rosenstein objected to Comey's conduct in the investigation into Hillary Clinton's private server emails. "There is an FBI investigation going on right now with all things related to Russian Federation, done by the career professionals at the FBI who are going to continue to be career professionals".

"We need the facts".

The Justice Department on Wednesday appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to lead the investigation. "Any suggestion that today's announcement is somehow an effort to stop the FBI's investigation of Russia's attempt to influence the election last fall is misplaced", she said in that statement.

Because Comey could handle this one of two ways: The president makes this request, and the first time Comey might say to him, 'You know, Mr. President, it's inappropriate for us to have this conversation, and I would appreciate if you would not make a request like this to me again.' That's a way to handle it that says very clearly to the president that this should never be repeated. A memo reportedly penned by Comey after a February meeting with Trump suggested the president had asked him to halt a probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation.

In a tweet on May 12, Trump said: "Russia must be laughing up their sleeves watching as the USA tears itself apart over a Democrat EXCUSE for losing the election".

What was Comey up to?

"The appointment of former FBI director and respected lawyer Robert Mueller as special counsel for the Russian Federation investigation is a positive development and will provide some certainty for the American people that the investigation will proceed fairly and free of political influence", Senator Richard Burr said and Mark Warner, chairman and ranking member of Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said.

"Comey lost confidence of nearly everyone in Washington, Republicans and Democrats alike. When things calm down, they will be thanking me!", Trump tweeted on May 10.

Stories have emerged at a near daily rate about the Comey-Trump relationship ever since Trump fired him from the agency last week, leading to some of the public pressure for a special prosecutor to be named.

An influential Republican Congressman has asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation to hand over all relevant documents within a week.

Trump has himself discarded his original explanation for the Comey firing, telling NBC's Lester Holt last week that when he chose to "just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won". "The President must be impeached", Green said.

The controversy has further weakened the Trump regime, which was earlier cheered by markets for its pledge to reform USA taxes and boost domestic businesses.

It was another example of wrongdoing that Trump and his advisers dismiss as "fake news" invented by the major news media to bring down his presidency.
