Three killed after auto strikes tree, splits in half, sinks into bayou

Sorrento - Shortly before midnight on May 18, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle crash on USA 61 south of LA 22 in Ascension Parish after a family member located the crashed vehicle.

Troopers identified the victims as Tomas Jones, 23; Austin Kiernan, 22; and Sydney Persac, 19.

Senior Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP said the crash happened on Airline Highway at Pond Road, which is just east of LA 22, in Sorrento.

Two men and a woman from St. Amant were killed early Thursday after their auto struck a tree and became submerged in an Ascension Parish bayou. He said investigators have pieced together that the trio was headed north on Airline Highway when the vehicle went off the road and hit an embankment.

"They were travelling northbound on United States 61 when for unknown reasons they ran off the roadway, and the vehicle became airborne and struck a tree, which caused it to split in half", Lee said. He added the auto then landed in the bayou.

State Troopers were unsure if the occupants were restrained at the time of the crash, but say they were all located outside the vehicle.

The vehicle wasn't located until shortly before midnight on May 18 after a family member of one of the deceased located it, according to Lee.

While authorities were investigating the wreck, they discovered a fourth body that they said is unrelated to the auto crash.
