Toronto's Kevin Pillar suspended 2 games for anti-gay slur

Toronto's Kevin Pillar suspended 2 games for anti-gay slur

"We have begun an investigation into the matter", Major League Baseball spokesman Michael Teevan said Thursday in an email.

Although it is unclear if Pillar will face any discipline, his comment did cause a response on Twitter.

Toronto general manager Ross Atkins told reporters on Thursday that Pillar's pay for those two games will be donated to a charity.

Pillar will sit out Thursday's game against the Braves and Friday's game in Baltimore.

"It just stems from a little frustration in myself and, just the way the series has been going".

"It was immature, it was stupid, it was uncalled for".

"He's coming out with a response that he was angry, that he's a competitive guy, that's not an apology, right?" said Melissa Jordan on Thursday morning.

The teams were meeting for a third straight day in a home-and-home series - Atlanta totaled 19 runs in winning the first two games in Toronto.

"We are aware of the disturbing actions of an Elite security staff member at Sunday's game", the Chargers said at the time.

"I regret saying it wholeheartedly". I will learn from this incident and move on. "Don't let it define me".

Dwight Smith Jr., the son of the former outfielder who played for four teams, including the Braves, was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Pillar on the roster.

The Blue Jays suspended shortstop Yunel Escobar for three games after he wrote a homophobic slur in Spanish in black makeup under his eyes in 2012.

The tension didn't end after Pillar's outburst on Wednesday night.

In the eighth inning, both teams charged onto the field after Toronto's Jose Bautista homered off Eric O'Flaherty, stared down the Atlanta reliever and flipped his bat high in the air.

The benches emptied again but no punches were thrown. Teheran's first pitch to Bautista was inside.

The fifth-year player is hitting.305 this season and is in the top 10 in the American League in at-bats, runs, hits and doubles. "It's just turned into look-at-me stuff, it's not even about winning anymore". The following inning, Jose Bautista's bat flip with Atlanta up 8-3 led to another bench-clearing altercation. I'm just exhausted of it.

The rivalry between the Blue Jays and Rangers was heightened a year ago after Texas infielder Rougned Odor rocked Bautista with a punch during a scuffle. The Braves won 8-4.

Stroman pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings on Thursday night, allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out six.
