Donohoe murder suspect held in NY

According to a report in the national media today, the chief suspect in the murder of Garda Adrian Donohoe was detained by the United States' Homeland Security for immigration offences.

"We can not do this alone, we still need the public's help".

The man, who is in his twenties, is being held at a federal immigration prison in New Jersey, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confirmed.

It is believed that a former associate of the man, who is now living in Ireland, has been assisting gardai with their inquiries.

On the fourth anniversary of Det Gda Donohoe's murder in Jnauary, senior gardaí yesterday made a fresh appeal for anyone with information in relation to the murder to contact them. A number of people who would have previously not spoken up about the murder are now cooperating with the investigation.

Gardaí will also seek to question him in connection with the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe who was shot dead while on a cash escort at the Lordship Credit Union in Co Louth on 25 January 2013.

The chief suspect in the murder of Garda Adrian Donohoe is in custody here in the USA and is facing deportation back to Ireland.

Over the last four years, investigating officers have carried over 5,600 individual enquiries, taken over 2,500 witness statements and examined in excess of 20,000 hours of CCTV footage. They switch their time between states in a bid to keep the USA authorities from knowing their location.

The suspect could be deported as early as next week and will face immediate arrest upon arriving in Ireland.
