Liberty Softball wins NISC Regional, advances to championship round

The Broncos committed three errors during a crucial five-run fourth inning from Weber State, and Boise State's season ended with a 8-0 five-inning loss in the deciding game of the Ogden Regional of the National Invitational Softball Championship.

Held to a single hit during the opening two innings, Cal Poly produced the only lead it needed in the top of the third. Kenzie Friesen (13-3) earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, walking one in five innings. Juniors Stephanie Heyward and Chelsea Convissar strung together successive one-out singles and, two batters later, freshman first baseman Hailey Martin deposited a run-scoring single into center field.

"Winning a regional championship is pretty special", Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said.

As the No. 2 seed, the Redbirds earn a first-round bye and will face the victor of Cal Poly and Lamar on Monday at noon CT to begin the double-elimination tournament at Liberty's Kamphuis Field. It was fun to see some seniors have great days with [Mackenzi Corta] and [Sara Hingsberger] coming up big in game two. Cal Poly will face Lamar at 4 p.m., before the host Lady Flames face Weber State at 7 p.m.

Corta, playing in her final two home games, finished the afternoon with three hits, including two doubles, while White and Hawker each had three hits and senior Riana Splinter had a pair of hits and an RBI. The semifinal and final rounds will air live on ESPN3.com. Just one Wolf Pack player advanced into scoring position the entirety of the game.
