Even his enemies, Trump declared, recognize his innocence.

"I think it divides the country", Trump said of the special counsel.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that "the country is being tested in unprecedented ways" after learning of new reporting saying that Trump asked Comey to shelve the investigation.

A US House of Representatives spokesperson has said that it was "obvious" that there were people who wanted to "harm" President Donald Trump by leaking documents of former FBI Director about alleged pressure exerted on him by the mogul.

On Thursday, after a briefing with Rosenstein on Capitol Hill, Sen.

Trump is leaving Friday for his first foreign trip, to the Mideast and beyond, and aides had hoped the disarray at home would have been calmed if not resolved by take-off time.

Comey had been heading the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into the connections between Russian officials and Trump's presidential campaign.

But calmness seemed far off.

"No. No. Next question", Trump responded curtly to a reporter during a news conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Thursday afternoon.

Donald Trump has refuted the claims made by a media report that he had asked sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James Comey to quash the agency's investigation into ties between his former national security adviser Mike Flynn and Russian Federation.

Another answer on that subject seemed both more specific and perhaps ambiguous. "And there is no collusion between, certainly myself and my campaign".

Hours earlier, on Twitter, Trump more colorfully called Rosenstein's appointment of Mueller as special counsel "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

Senators said that Rosenstein steered clear of specifics while making clear that Mueller has wide latitude to pursue the investigation wherever it leads, potentially including criminal charges.

We need to get the facts out in the open.

Trump and Lieberman discussed the position at the White House on Wednesday.

He offered new justifications for his decision Thursday, even while referring to the Rosenstein memo as "a very, very strong recommendation". That was the White House's position initially after the deputy attorney general argued in a memo that Comey had erred in handling the FBI's investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's private email server, even though Trump had praised Comey on the campaign trail previous year.

"Then he had the very poor performance on Wednesday. Because you look at all of the people on the Democratic side, not only the Republican side, that were saying such awful things about director Comey", he said.
